3.0 out of 5 stars Not the easiest of products to upgrade the SSD for – you’ve been warned
I made the fatal error of looking at the Microsoft teardown video before buying and thinking OK, this looks fiddly, but do able, so I took a chance and got my fingers burnt.
A little over a year of upgrading the SSD for something larger and the replacement SSD failed then I killed the laptop putting the original SSD back. Putting the ribbon cable from the keyboard into the connector on the motherboard is certainly no job for anyone who needs to wear glasses on a small table to see what they’re doing. Should have done it at work where I’ve more space and more natural light.
As for the laptop itself I was very happy with it, it has a very good keyboard, a low powered device that charges well via USB C (I must say as I needed a 30 watt folding USB C charger for other devices I didn’t use the supplied charger) and can still be used at the same time. Very quiet and yet gives 80-85% of the potential performance the processor can potentially deliver if it’s installed an Intel Nuk and pulling 60 watts from the mains whilst making one hell of a din in the process from its fan. In this format the processor sips power and being responsive as well, helping the laptop to have a reasonable battery life of about 6-7 hours between charges.
It’s small, light and fitted into an existing amazon laptop sleeve designed for a smaller 11.6” laptop I already had at a bit of a squeeze – although I dear say if it hadn’t the next size up from amazon would have had a lot of spare space to it or buying a Microsoft sleeve to keep the overall size small and yet protected.
A little gutted its no longer working but that’s clearly due to me rather than Microsoft on that score. I can’t blame Microsoft for my own clumsiness but a little surprised Microsoft didn’t go for the larger 2242 SSD format (except all it’s other devices include it’s surface hub 2 & 3’s use the same sized SSD format).

I’ll start by saying I love my laptop. It looks amazing, which was important for me, and it does everything I need it to. I just have a few qualms which let it down a bit.
Firstly, the metal the laptop is made out of is very soft. I am very careful with my laptop, it always lives in a case and I’ve never once dropped, knocked or dinked it. Despite this, I have had it for almost a year and it has three noticeable dents on the top, which is really disappointing, especially considering how much I care for it (it wasn’t cheap, and I’m a student!). I noticed one of these dents within the first week or so of owning it, which leads to me to suspect that it arrived that way. This issue could be resolved by popping a “second-skin” case on, like you can get for macbooks, but these are quite few and far between in my experience!
Another issue I have is that it occasionally struggles with watching videos. It sometimes jumps around, crashes, pauses, lags etc, which can be frustrating.
Finally, it can get quite hot to touch when playing games etc. I understand that the laptop is not for gaming, but the games I play should not be strenuous! Also, the hotness is not just warmth, it’s hotness where I have to put something under it so as to not burn my thighs (of course when it gets this hot, I close any applications, move the laptop to a cool room when possible etc).
Overall – like I said, I love my laptop. It looks great, does everything I need it to for my studies, it’s lightweight, sound quality is good, camera and mic work well, and generally video playing is good – image clarity is amazing!
Just the few issues I mentioned can be frustrating, especially when you’re spending this much on a laptop. I would not recommend this laptop for gaming, though I imagine gamers aren’t after laptops!

I got this laptop in April (it’s now November) for my mum who needed an upgrade. It still works just as well as when she got it, still just as fast, and is built very well. I wanted a laptop where she would be able to do her emails, basic docs and browse, and not slow down over time. This laptop is perfect for this and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

It’s honestly great. It’s fast and efficient, the battery is very decent. Its light weight and smooth and I’m impressed with the USB C charging as my Samsung charger so it’s super convenient too.
I tried out several different keyboards on a range of laptops at curry’s but this one is the one I thought felt best as well as the most sleek looking. The size is great and again light weight which makes it great for travelling.
If you are thinking to get it you may as well pay the extra bit of money for the extra ram and storage otherwise you might be disappointed with overall performance. I chose the highest storage and ram and it works like a dream. Such an easy start up and fast charging too, honestly fantastic buy.
