2.0 out of 5 stars Nice build quality but is unusable for intended purpose
The laptop feels really solid and well built. It looks lovely. The screen is amazing. However, then the problems start. I bought this for taking notes with the pen, but this just doesn’t work. The palm rejection is terrible even with the correct settings in the pen settings menu. So it draws stuff under the palm whilst I’m also drawing with the pen. Sometimes OneNote minimises before the pen reaches the display. You can’t wake the laptop up when it tablet mode: you have to put it back into laptop mode and press the power button. My handwriting looks worse with this device than with my Wacom tablet on a desktop. I don’t know why, but often writing looks wobbly with this device. In general, when I’m drawing with this thing I feel like I’m fighting it the whole time: unusable.

Then there’s fan: it’s kicking in the whole time and it’s *noisy*. The laptop get uncomfortably hot. I tried changing the settings in the HP app, but this didn’t help.

The battery life it terrible. I don’t know exactly how terrible because I’m sending it back after a few hours of use. However, I can say that I charged it to between 80 and 90% and after about 3 hours use it was down to about 40%. All I was doing was using Onenote. No streaming videos or anything else that might tax it.

I really like the build quality and presentation but I can’t possibly keep this thing. Even if I made peace with the fact that the pen input is not going to work properly, I still don’t want a laptop that is as noisy and hot as this thing is.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish
Firstly the battery wasn’t charging. When I took the plug out the laptop would turn off. On the login page the battery has a cross sign.

    Secondly the Wi-Fi wasn’t working.

Thirdly when I purchased the laptop I checked the warranty. Only 7 months remaining instead of 1 year. Clearly Amazon has sold me a used laptop even they say ‘new – new’

1.0 out of 5 stars Never Worked
How a company is able to dispatch a defective product is beyond me? I’ve had a lot of laptops and this one didn’t last an afternoon. It shut down every 5 minutes. It overheated for no reason. My 6 year old laptop being held together by tape is more enduring. For an ‘elite’ product like this, the quality is lacking. Honestly, I could never recommend this. Amazon customer support was not helpful. Oof, what a nightmare!

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be better for price.
The laptop looks fantastic with the black and gold colours. I would also mention that the screen is beautiful to look at, especially the aspect ratio for such a small laptop allows for more screen. The speakers are great too with bangs and olufsen system. However two speakers are downwards firing so the sound gets muffled when the laptop is on your lap/surface or tablet mode.
Why I gave it only 2 stars is the fan. Omg it is so loud and distracting. Comes on even when you’re not doing any high intensity work. Also beware that it gets warm pretty quickly, so I wouldn’t advise putting it on your lap for long as it gets uncomfortable. I had to use a laptop stand. The Web cam is another issue of mine. It is terrible. Looks like a 2006 phone camera. With more virtual meetings, you would think hp would at least add a decent camera. Also stay away from this laptop if you want to connect to external monitor at 4k because it only gives a 30hz refresh rate. You have to scale it down to 1440p for 60hz. This is very bad for me as I need to connect to a monitor. Finally, don’t even think about doing 3d modelling, drawings/ rendering on it. It gets SUPER hot and freezes. I will be returning mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This is the first laptop I have ever tried that converts to a tablet.
I have to say it’s amazing.
I’ve compared it to both the LG Gram 2020 and the Apple Air M1 2020.
It’s faster than the Gram and I would say slightly faster than the Air.
Both of those laptops are also superb.
I bought the Apple about a month ago…it’s brilliant and my first Apple.
I would say basically though that it’s for different things. For me Apple for play and this for work/play.
    So ….
    Pros
    Really fast
    Great screen
    Good camera for Zoom sessions
Easy to change to tablet- this is amazing
    Comes with pen
    Fast to charge
Charge lasts a long time about 18 hours for me before I decided to recharge
The tablet is great for marking work electronically
    Cons
Only one! I’m not a huge fan of the way the keyboard is lit. It has a blueish light which took me time to get used to.
    Ease of use?
I used Microsoft Authenticator App to help set up… made putting windows etc on a breeze.
The set up is guided by Cortana and it’s really easy.
Out of the three new laptops I have and also comparing with my work HP this is the best overall.
It does it all. Laptop to tablet- easy to use windows- really fast- does look sleek in silver metal.
Only other way to really compare may be weight…but it’s not heavy.
    Amazing machine!

1.0 out of 5 stars Screen didn’t work
I was skeptical about the price point (£1096) being lower than RRP for a brand new laptop, so I confirmed that it was definitely new. However, it turns out it might not have been.

    1) As soon as I bought it, there was an instant price jump to £1200 for the same product from the same seller.
    2) The charger was not in the plastic casing (the plastic was under the open charger).
    3) The screen never turned on at all – there was an accessibility voiceover set up instead.

I contacted Amazon tech support but they were unable to help, and the manufacturer support was not available on weekends, so I decided to proceed with a return instead. I suspect they will try to resell this to someone else so be wary.

(NB: This review is about the specific laptop that I bought, and not a review about all HP Spectres in general – I will still buy another one, but from a physical store where I can just go in and get a replacement).

    UPDATE 17/04/23
Amazon received the return on 30 March. I still haven’t received my refund. I have been asked to wait until 24 April as there is a 30 day waiting period for returns of high value items (They were unable to provide a link to any policy stating this).

I have bought another HP Spectre which works beautifully so far! Love the extra height!

    Second update:
Turns out the battery in the new one is fake. Also bought from Amazon from a different seller.

It’s much better than I thought as I’m not a fan of Windows 10

4.0 out of 5 stars In general terms, a great laptop
My only complaint is about the fan. It turns on at any time and is very nosy even if you are just browsing the internet. Sometimes is quite annoying
Apart from that, it has a beautiful appearance, the 2-in-1 experience is very good and the laptop it’s fast.

    I’m satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
I got this laptop to replace my current desktop/iPad situation and it has absolutely delivered. The touchscreen and 360 transition is seamless and it boots up within seconds – a drastic improvement on my previous situation! It’s neat and compact, the quality of the build is fantastic. It came with a case and a pen for the touchscreen which was an unexpected bonus.

The click pad is responsive but less so than I would have expected. But that is literally my only complaint about this laptop, everything else is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb laptop, great battery life despite 14″ OLED high res screen
Amazon inexplicably had these for £1095 for the Core i7 / 512GB SSD / 16GB / OLED model rather than the £1599 they normally list for so I bought it immediately. It would be a decent laptop for RRP but at that price it’s amazing.

The screen is gorgeous, and while it does reduce battery life vs the LCD option it’s still 8 hours or so. The machine is very responsive, leaving my much larger XPS15 with a 45W quad core 6th gen i7 in the dust, the keyboard is great, and you even get the pen and a nice folio case with it.

After years of Dell machines (private and work) with highly variable build and finish it is also very well put together. My only complaints are that the speakers are a bit quiet (but sound good), and some of the keys for slashes etc are a bit weird.
