3.0 out of 5 stars Great alternative for Apple Mac book Air if not let down by Windows 11 for ARMx64
For whatever reason, this laptop was offered for ridiculously low likely close to production cost when I bought it from Amazon and the price jumped 100£ after my purchase, yet it is still great value for money as far as the hardware you get for your money when considering price similar to mid-range smartphone.
Due to using smartphone style of processor, it’s very power efficient and thus battery life should be comparable to Apple products also using upscaled smartphone processor designs, and while real-life battery won’t be anywhere as high as promoted, even with enabled Wifi and Bluetooth devices connected to it you should get easily through the day while doing office tasks with some internet and video streaming for which is a laptop equipped with a great display for usual sRGB color space web content consumption with as good as it gets (for IPS) black levels for wide viewing angle IPS LED display and great backlight homogeneity about which even my far more expensive workstation laptop can only dream about. Due to the glossy display, there are issues in outdoor use despite reasonable brightness but if that is what you need, there are matt display covers for glossy screens or even privacy filters for reducing viewing angles to stop curious watching what you doing while sitting next to you.
Speakers are also much better than what you can find on the vast majority of laptops and will be fully suitable for watching content from bed (due to passive cooling easy to accommodate) despite not being as good as on the latest Apple laptops, they are close enough, and few will have trouble with their sound reproduction for video streaming purposes. If you need higher quality, you likely will want premium headphones anyway and the headphone jack was sufficient for once 100$ Audio-Technica M50x headphones, spending more makes sense mostly for wireless things as the laptop was designed for, at the time, the most common content consumption, not as a replacement for expensive studio audio equipment…
Touchpad is large enough and fully usable even though the laptop does not have a dedicated pointing knob as found on some Lenovo Thinkpads while the keyboard is nowadays classic chiclet-style with a low degree of movement that is a necessity on lightweight thin devices. Of course, a mechanical keyboard would be more suitable for writers while a magnetic keyboard as both found on some expensive Dell laptops will also likely last a lot longer, so if you really like this laptop, you may want to buy a spare keyboard, as to me, keyboards on laptops tends to last around 5 years, and I am not exactly Shakespeare type. Perhaps covering the keyboard after every use to protect it from dust instead of closing the display lid every time thus wearing out display latches will make some difference. In any way, the laptop is otherwise passively cooled as is common in smartphones using a similar power-efficient processor type which makes it far less demanding on maintenance as you will never need clean cooling to keep up performance but the trade-off is that processing power is limited to usual mobile use, not as a mobile workstation replacement for demanding tasks like heavy video editing, CAD and 3D rendering outside casual playing of smartphone games of similar release date (did not tried so far)…
While I tested the laptop only with a SIM card internet USB dongle and did not try an integrated eSim solution thus I do not know how an integrated internal antenna for up to 5G connection performs, during my trip to Hungary using a USB stick was connection rather intermittent during rail travel, so if you thinking that you will be surfing the internet in the middle of nowhere with this one on your lap, you better check connection availability in the area of your interest, as both lack of connectivity and too many people connecting at the same time in densely populated areas can be an issue.
Lenovo Yoga 5G has a premium chassis build somewhat comparable to Mac Book Air, though the display lid is likely not as stiff, so I bought for around 20£ travel solution in the form of leather styled protective case with magnets to keep the laptop closed called on Amazon:
Alapmk Protective Case for 14″ Asus Q406DA & Dell Vostro 5401 5402/Latitude 7400/Latitude 5400 5401 5410 5411/Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise/Inspiron 14 5401 5405 5408 5402 5409 Laptop,Black
Cons:
The camera while adding a convenient Windows Hello face unlock option is rather mediocre in its image and lags miles behind the best-integrated cameras on laptops available today, you will want to buy an external option if planning to use video calls a lot and need to be representable.
2. Windows 11 for ARMx64 processor was in the current iteration afterthought that was not integrated as well with hardware as a more expensive alternative from Apple as far as I can see from responses from Apple users. For example, during my use in a restaurant, when I tried to shut down my laptop after use, Windows found the worst possible time to update while advising me against shutting it by force, thus I waited for several minutes until the display shut down, then when I opened laptop in a train, the system failed to start on several attempts until Windows recovery option was finally offered, and even then I needed several Windows reinstalls to find that laptop fail to boot into Windows 11 when a certain update was trying to install after automatic download which you can pause but cannot disable without modifying Windows settings/files/registry options, so I am currently on older Windows update standard and unable to update without losing the ability to start Windows, despite windows did not find any issues with installation in terms of damaged or missing files when running a check. Perhaps an update of laptop firmware, maybe a later Windows update version will solve this issue for me, or a clean Windows install without using the existing backup preinstalled on disk is needed but I don’t care at this point.
Another issue is that despite Windows and processor combo being fully capable of running Android apps, this option is not included by default but needs to be rather clunky installed especially if you don’t want also install the Android app store with its privacy issues and just intending to use whatever Android apps you can freely find on the web. Of course, you can run Android apps even on Intel Core 64bit processors with free-of-charge emulators but one would expect that if you use a smartphone-style processor in a laptop, smartphone apps will be working by default but this was at least during my testing, not the case with current Windows 11. Yet, at the same time, at least without further Windows updates or some alternative you will be unable to run plenty of software designed for x86 PC architecture that otherwise runs on Windows for x86 processors.
I would recommend this laptop in its current state I have experience with only to experienced users who can fix issues if occur as once Windows for ARM style (RISC-V) processors mature, it will be a great deal and alternative to Mac Book Air which in the current models likely won’t last as long as I got very good experiences with similar passively cooled low voltage processor laptops lasting decade or more (apart from keyboard) while even most modern Apple laptops reaching water boiling point temperatures on their processors in stress tests, something that is not exactly what I call long-term survivable design in the age of recurring heat waves…
Conclusion:
Because you can buy used office-oriented 1kg 12,5″ Panasonic Toughbooks or old new stock HP Elite G8 13,3″ for 1/4 of the price of modern Apple offerings that are still cheaper than this Lenovo attempt while working as expected (at least if you are able to reinstall Windows if needed, then you can check Amazon or Ebay) due to using standard PC Intel/AMD processor with a battery life of around 10 hours and easily replaceable parts instead of permanently soldered ones as is common on newer laptops, I am rather weary recommending this laptop despite great hardware and built quality simply because of poor software support, which while it’s not the fault of Lenovo, makes this product hard to recommend to anybody but experienced users hoping that Windows for ARMx64 processors will be one day fixed, thus making it a great value if bought for less than half price of modern Mac Book Air…
